This program is designed to make rail travel highly accessible and affordable for passengers with special needs. The discount is available seven days a week on almost all routes.

In addition to ticket discounts, passengers with disabilities receive priority boarding, wheelchair storage, and assistance from station staff (Red Cap service) and onboard attendants.

Disability Eligibility & Documentation Rules

To qualify for the disability discount, you must present acceptable proof of disability during travel. Conductors may request this documentation when scanning tickets.

Acceptable forms of proof include: A SSDI or SSI award letter, a Medicare card, a state-issued disabled license plate or parking placard ID card, a transit system disabled identification card, or a written letter from a physician verifying the disability.

One companion traveling with a passenger with a disability is also eligible for the 10% discount. The companion must travel on the same train, date, and route, and be booked under the same reservation.

How to Book Accessible Fares

To book a disability discount ticket, use our search form above and select the 'Disability' passenger type. The booking engine will automatically calculate the 10% discount for both the passenger and companion.

Passengers requiring specialized boarding assistance, wheelchair seating, or lower-level accommodations should contact our reservation support desk. We coordinate boarding details with station agents and lock in appropriate seats.

Accommodation & Route Rules

Accommodation Eligibility: The 10% discount applies to Coach, Business Class, and the rail fare portion of private sleeper cabins (Roomettes, Bedrooms, and Accessible Bedrooms). The additional space charge for the sleeper cabin is not eligible for the discount.

Route Exclusions: Disability discounts are valid on almost all Amtrak routes, but they do not apply to premium Acela Express services. Connecting Thruway bus segments operated by independent carriers may also be excluded.

Sleeper Upgrades: Upgrading to the **Accessible Bedroom** (located on the lower level of Superliner cars) is a great value, as the space is designed with wheelchair space, grab bars, and an en-suite private bathroom.

Comparison: Disability Rate vs. Senior Discounts

Disability Discount (10%): Applies to disabled passengers of any age, and extends the same 10% discount to one companion traveling with them. Requires physical SSDI or medical proof.

Everyday Senior (65+): Offers a 10% discount based solely on age, but does not extend companion discounts to friends or family members traveling with you.

Common Accessible Booking Mistakes to Avoid

Companion Booking Separately: A common mistake is booking the companion ticket under a separate reservation. The companion discount is only valid when both tickets are purchased together in a single booking.

Missing Proof of Disability: Forgetting to carry your SSDI award letter or disabled ID card during travel is a common mistake. If the conductor requests proof and you cannot show it, you will be charged the difference to the full standard adult fare.
