This program supports members of the nation's largest rail advocacy organization. It provides a comfortable, accessible travel option for members traveling to regional meetings, visiting family, or exploring the country.

RPA members can book Coach class seating or upgrade to private sleeper compartments, enjoying spacious cabins, scenic viewing lounges, and onboard dining services at a reduced rate.

RPA Member Eligibility & ID Rules

To qualify for the 10% savings, you must hold a current Rail Passengers Association membership in good standing. The membership must be active prior to booking your travel.

When booking tickets, you must enter your valid RPA Membership Number in the reservation system. During travel, the conductor may request to see your digital or physical RPA membership card.

Note that you must join the RPA at least 3 days before booking to allow your membership number to activate in Amtrak's reservations system.

How to Book RPA Fares

Accommodation & Route Rules

Accommodation Eligibility: The 10% discount applies to Coach, Business Class, and the rail fare portion of private sleeper cabins (Roomettes, Bedrooms, and Family Bedrooms). The additional space charge for the sleeper cabin is not eligible for the discount.

Route Exclusions: RPA discounts are valid on almost all Amtrak routes, but they do not apply to premium Acela Express services. Connecting Thruway bus segments operated by independent carriers may also be excluded.

Route Spotlight: Active members often use their discount on the iconic **California Zephyr** or **Empire Builder** routes, saving on the long-distance rail fare portion of their cross-country tickets.

Comparison: RPA Member Discount vs. Senior Citizen Fares

RPA Member (10%): Open to passengers of any age who join the association. Requires booking at least 3 days in advance and enters your member number during checkout.

Everyday Senior (65+): Offers a similar 10% savings based on age verification, but has no membership fees and does not require advance purchase windows.

Common RPA Booking Mistakes to Avoid

Booking Too Late: Forgetting the 3-day advance purchase rule is a common mistake. If you attempt to book an RPA discount ticket 48 hours before departure, the discount will not apply.

Acela Booking Attempts: Attempting to apply the RPA discount to Acela trains is a common mistake. Choose a Northeast Regional or standard corridor train instead.
