Is an Amtrak Family Bedroom Worth It? Booking Decisions

Who Should Choose a Family Bedroom: Families of 3 or 4 traveling with children under 12 who want a private room to travel together, and want to avoid the premium of booking multiple cabins. Located on the lower level, this cabin spans the entire width of the train. It is also excellent for families traveling with senior relatives, as the lower level avoids narrow stairs entirely and is situated close to the luggage racks and entry door.

When It's Not the Best Choice: The Family Bedroom is NOT recommended for a group of 3 or 4 adults or tall teenagers, because the two children's bunks are only 4'9" and 4'7" long (far too short for adults). For adult groups, booking a Private Bedroom Suite or two adjacent Roomettes is far superior. Additionally, it doesn't feature an en-suite private toilet or shower (only a private sink and vanity)—so families who demand in-room bathroom privacy should upgrade to standard Private Bedrooms instead.

Superliner Exclusivity: Family Bedrooms are exclusively available on two-level Superliner cars (primarily Midwest, West, and Auto Train routes). You will not find Family Bedrooms on single-level Viewliner cars operating on Eastern routes.

Common Booking Mistakes: Because each Superliner sleeper car contains exactly ONE Family Bedroom, booking last-minute is a critical mistake as this cabin is often the first to sell out. Another mistake is assuming that since there is no en-suite bathroom, you will have to walk far—the lower level of the Superliner carriage contains four restrooms and a spacious public shower room just steps down the hall. Remember that all passenger hot meals, desserts, and non-alcoholic drinks are 100% included in your fare.
