Senior Citizen Eligibility & ID Rules

A valid government-issued photo ID showing your date of birth (such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID card) is required. The train conductor may request to see this ID during ticket scanning.

If you are an AARP member aged 50 to 64, you can also qualify for a 10% discount on select fares using your AARP membership number. This is an excellent alternative for early retirees who do not yet meet the 65+ age limit.

Route Exclusions: Senior discounts are valid on almost all Amtrak routes, but exclusions apply to peak weekday morning and evening trains on the premium Acela Express. Additionally, non-train connecting services (Amtrak Thruway buses) do not qualify.

Acela Blackout Hours: Attempting to apply the senior discount to Acela trains during weekday business hours (6:00 AM - 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM - 7:00 PM) is a common mistake. The system will default to standard adult rates during these times.

Sleeper Car Space Upgrades: A common oversight is assuming the 10% discount applies to the entire Roomette or Bedroom cost. The discount only reduces the base passenger ticket fare, not the accommodation space charge.
