National park packages are available on major routes nationwide, including the Empire Builder, California Zephyr, and Southwest Chief, providing travelers with a memorable, educational journey.

National Park Package Eligibility & Features

Anyone is eligible to book a National Parks Package—no age or membership restrictions apply. The package must be booked as a unified itinerary, combining train tickets and participating hotel or tour features.

The package includes several key perks: 50% discount on child rail fares (which stacks with package savings), priority boarding at major stations, customizable lodging options, and the ability to add rental cars or sightseeing tours at your destination.

These packages are highly popular during the summer national park season. Because park hotels and sleeper compartments have limited availability, booking 60 to 90 days in advance is strongly recommended.

Accommodation & Route Rules

Accommodation Eligibility: Packages can be booked in Coach class or upgraded to private sleeper cabins. For long-distance national park journeys, upgrading to a Roomette or Bedroom is highly recommended to enjoy private berths and hot showers.

Route Availability: National park packages are valid on all long-distance Superliner routes operating in the West and Midwest, as well as select eastern corridors. They are not available on commuter-heavy weekday Acela express lines.

Packing and Planning Guide: We recommend packing hiking boots, binoculars for wildlife viewing, multiple clothing layers (park temperatures vary widely), and reusable water bottles. Prepare for intermittent mobile phone coverage.

Suggested 7-Day Western Parks Itinerary

Day 1-3: Chicago to Glacier National Park. Board the Empire Builder in Chicago. Watch the transition from Midwest plains to the Rocky Mountains. Sleep in a Roomette and detrain at West Glacier Station.

Day 4-7: Glacier and Yellowstone Tour. Spend two days exploring Glacier's Going-to-the-Sun Road. Rent a car and travel south to Yellowstone for geyser viewing and wildlife safaris, returning via Flagstaff.

Common National Park Package Pitfalls

Sleeper Availability: Waiting too long to book sleeper compartments is a common mistake. Since Superliner cars only contain one Family Bedroom, these cabins sell out months in advance during summer national park travel seasons.

Park Lodging Rules: Park hotels have strict cancellation policies. Always double check that your travel dates match your hotel check-in/out times to avoid booking fees.
