Understanding the Sliding Scale Discount

The Share Fares structure operates on a fixed sliding scale that automatically applies to the passenger tickets in a single booking. It is important to know that all passengers must travel on the exact same train, departure date, and origin/destination stations.

Here is how the pricing breaks down for a group of four: Passenger 1 pays 100% of the base fare. Passenger 2 pays 85% of the fare. Passenger 3 pays 40% of the fare. Passenger 4 pays 40% of the fare. For a group of four, this yields an average discount of 31% off the entire ticket package.

How to Claim the Share Fares Discount

To apply the Share Fares discount, you must search for fares with exactly 2 to 4 passengers selected on eligible routes. The discount is applied automatically in the booking engine when you meet the 3-day advance purchase requirement.

Because the reservation system requires all passengers to remain on the same itinerary, any modifications or cancellations after booking can affect the discount for the remaining travelers. If one person cancels, the fare structure for the rest of the group may be recalculated.

Accommodation & Route Rules

Accommodation Eligibility: Share Fares apply strictly to Coach class seating. Sleeper car compartments (Roomettes, Bedrooms), Acela First Class, and Business Class upgrades are excluded from the sliding-scale discount.

Route Coverage: This discount is available on many long-distance national routes and regional corridors, including the Northeast Regional, Capitol Corridor, and San Joaquins. It is generally not valid on Acela or the Auto Train, and certain high-volume holiday periods may be blacked out.

Booking Window: Tickets must be purchased at least 3 days before the train departs. Walk-up or last-minute bookings do not qualify for the Share Fares program.

For a group of four traveling from Boston to New York City on the Northeast Regional, if the base coach fare is $40 per person: Passenger 1 pays $40. Passenger 2 pays $34. Passenger 3 pays $16. Passenger 4 pays $16. The total cost is $106 instead of $160, saving the group $54.

On the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Portland, if the base Coach ticket is $36: Passenger 1 pays $36. Passenger 2 pays $30.60. Passenger 3 pays $14.40. Passenger 4 pays $14.40. The total group fare is $95.40, bringing the average ticket cost down to under $24.

Common Share Fares Mistakes to Avoid

Split Travel: All members of the reservation must board and deboard the train at the same stations. If one member attempts to board at a different stop, the ticket validator may flag the reservation and void the remaining group tickets.

Booking Too Late: Forgetting the 3-day advance purchase rule is a common mistake. If you attempt to book a Share Fare ticket 48 hours before departure, the discount will not show and the system will default to full standard fares.
