This program is designed to support service members traveling on leave, relocating during permanent change of station (PCS), or visiting family. It extends to dependents, making family travel highly accessible for military households.

In addition to the 10% ticket discount, active military personnel receive priority ticket processing, boarding assistance, and a standard waiver of change fees on select reservation classes.

Active Duty & Dependent Eligibility Rules

To qualify for the military discount, the passenger must be an active-duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces, a member of the National Guard or Reservists on active status, or an immediate family member holding a valid military dependent ID card.

During ticket scanning or boarding, the active service member must present their Common Access Card (CAC). Spouses and children (dependents) must present their valid Uniformed Services ID Card (DD Form 1173).

Dependent children under the age of 18 do not need to show ID if traveling with an active service member parent, but dependents traveling alone must carry their DD Form 1173 to verify their eligibility.

Accommodation & Route Rules

Accommodation Eligibility: The 10% discount applies to Coach, Business Class, and the rail fare portion of private sleeper cabins (Roomettes, Bedrooms, and Family Bedrooms). The additional space charge for the sleeper cabin is not eligible for the discount.

Route Exclusions: Military discounts are valid on almost all Amtrak routes, but they do not apply to premium Acela Express services. Connecting Thruway bus segments operated by independent carriers may also be excluded.

Auto Train Compatibility: Active duty military households relocating to or from Florida during a PCS move can utilize the overnight Amtrak Auto Train. The 10% passenger discount applies to the rail fare, helping you transport your family and private vehicle together.

Comparison: Active Duty military vs. Veterans Discount

Active Duty Military: Offers 10% off for active personnel and immediate family dependents (spouses/children). Spouses can travel independently with valid DD Form 1173 dependent ID.

Military Veterans: Also offers 10% off, but applies strictly to the veteran passenger. Spouses and family dependents of veterans do not qualify for the discount program unless they served independently.

Common Military Booking Pitfalls

Invalid ID Formats: A common mistake is presenting veterans ID cards or state driver's licenses with military veteran designations for this active-duty program. If you are a veteran, you must book under the dedicated **Military Veterans** discount page to avoid boarding issues.

Separate Travel: Dependents must carry their valid DD Form 1173 if traveling independently from the active service member. If a dependent travels without their ID card, the conductor will charge the full standard adult fare.
