This program helps ease the financial burden on military families relocating during permanent change of station (PCS), visiting relatives during deployment, or traveling during school breaks. It provides extra savings on top of standard child rates.

Military children enjoy spacious train cars, power outlets, and Café Car amenities, making long journeys more comfortable and affordable.

Military Child Eligibility & Verification Rules

To qualify for the 15% savings, the passenger must be a dependent child (aged 2-18) of an active-duty member of the U.S. Armed Forces, National Guard, or Reservists on active status.

During boarding or ticket validation, the child must present their valid Uniformed Services ID Card (DD Form 1173). Dependent children under 10 years of age do not need to show ID if traveling with a parent who holds an active CAC card.

If a dependent teenager (ages 13-18) is traveling alone, they must carry their DD Form 1173 to verify their discount eligibility with the train conductor.

Accommodation & Route Rules

Accommodation Eligibility: The 15% discount applies to Coach, Business Class, and the rail fare portion of private sleeper cabins (Roomettes, Bedrooms, and Family Bedrooms). The additional space charge for the sleeper cabin is not eligible for the discount.

Route Exclusions: Military child discounts are valid on almost all Amtrak routes, but they do not apply to premium Acela Express services. Connecting Thruway bus segments operated by independent carriers may also be excluded.

Sleeper Upgrades: Military families often book the Superliner Family Bedroom, which spans the entire width of the lower level, providing a comfortable space for two adults and two children to travel together.

Comparison: Military Dependent Child vs. Standard Child Fares

Military Dependent Child (15%): Extends savings to teenage dependents aged 13-18. They qualify for the 15% discount when traveling independently, provided they hold a valid DD Form 1173 dependent card.

Everyday Child Discount (2-12): Offers a larger 50% discount but is limited to younger children aged 2-12 traveling with an adult guardian. Compare both options depending on your child's age.

Common Military Child Booking Mistakes

Expired ID Cards: A common mistake is attempting to travel with an expired DD Form 1173 dependent ID. Ensure all dependent cards are current prior to departure to avoid boarding issues.

Acela Booking Attempts: Attempting to apply the military child discount to Acela trains is a common mistake. Choose a Northeast Regional or standard corridor train instead.
